공간을 읽고, 위치를 말하고, 길을 찾아가는 영어 전치사 게임

영어를 공부할 때 학생들이 어려워하는 것 중 하나가 바로 전치사(preposition)​입니다. in은 ‘~안에’, on은 ‘~위에’, under는 ‘~아래에’라고 외우지만 막상 문장 속에서 사용하려고 하면 헷갈립니다. 그 이유는 전치사가 단순히 단어의 뜻을 나타내는 것이 아니라 두 대상 사이의 공간적 관계를 표현하는 말이기 때문입니다.

예를 들어, The book is on the table. The bag is under the table. The chair is next to the table. The sofa is in front of the window. 이 문장들을 한국어 뜻으로만 외우는 것보다 실제 책상, 의자, 가방을 보면서 위치를 말해 보면 훨씬 쉽게 이해할 수 있습니다. 그래서 이번에는 집의 배치도와 도시 지도를 이용해 전치사를 게임처럼 학습해 봅니다.

1. 먼저 전치사를 ‘공간 관계’로 이해하기

전치사를 공부할 때 가장 먼저 해야 할 일은 번역하는 것이 아닙니다. “무엇과 무엇의 관계인가?”​를 보는 것입니다. 예를 들어, The sofa is under the window. 라고 하면, under = 아래에 라고 외우는 데서 끝나는 것이 아니라, 소파와 창문 사이의 위치 관계가 어떻게 되어 있지? 라고 생각해야 합니다.

창문이 위에 있고 소파가 그 아래에 있으므로 under 를 사용하는 것입니다. 즉, 공간을 본다 → 위치 관계를 발견한다 → 전치사를 선택한다 → 문장으로 말한다 라는 순서로 학습합니다.

2. 게임 ① 「Where is it?」 — 어디에 있나요?

가구 배치도를 준비합니다. 학생 한 명이 그림에서 하나의 물건을 선택합니다. 예를 들어 sofa-bed를 선택했다면 다른 학생에게 질문합니다. Where is the sofa-bed? 대답하는 학생은 그림을 보고 전치사를 사용하여 대답합니다.

• It is along the wall.
• It is under the window.
• 이번에는 wardrobe를 선택합니다.
• Where is the wardrobe?
• It is on the right of the sofa-bed.
• It is against the wall.

이렇게 하나의 물건에 대해 두 개 이상의 전치사를 사용하여 설명하도록 하는 것이 좋습니다.

3. 게임 ② 「Guess the Place」 — 어디인지 맞혀 보세요

이번에는 학생이 물건의 이름을 말하지 않습니다. 대신 위치를 설명합니다. 예를 들어,

• It is next to the bed.
• It is by the window.
• There is a lamp on it.

다른 학생들은 무엇인지 맞힙니다.

• Is it the bedside table?
• Yes, it is!

이 게임의 장점은 학생이 자연스럽게 next to, by, on 등의 전치사를 반복해서 사용하게 된다는 것입니다.

4. 게임 ③ 「Where am I?」 — 내가 어디에 있을까요?

이번에는 도시 지도를 사용합니다. 한 학생이 지도에서 하나의 장소를 정합니다. 예를 들어 Wine Bar를 선택합니다. 그리고 이렇게 설명합니다.

• The Wine Bar is to the right of the Restaurant.
• It is on the first floor of the building.
• The Office is above it.

다른 학생들은 장소를 맞힙니다.

5. 게임 ④ 「Give Me Directions」 — 길을 알려 주세요

이번에는 전치사뿐 아니라 이동을 나타내는 표현까지 사용합니다. 한 학생이 출발점과 목적지를 정합니다. 예:

• Start: You are here
• Destination: Newsstand

학생은 길을 설명합니다.

• Go through the crossroads.
• Turn right.
• The Newsstand is by the side of the road.

또 다른 학생은 실제 지도에서 그 길을 따라가 봅니다. 설명이 맞았다면 목적지에 도착할 수 있습니다. 이 활동에서는 전치사가 단순한 문법 문제가 아니라 실제로 길을 찾기 위한 언어가 됩니다.

6. 게임 ⑤ 「Find the Hidden Place」 — 숨은 장소 찾기

교사가 지도에 특정 장소를 하나 정해 둡니다. 학생에게 힌트를 줍니다.

• It is opposite the 7-Eleven.
• It is next to the Restaurant.
• It is on the first floor.

학생들은 지도를 살펴보며 장소를 찾아야 합니다. 정답은? The Wine Bar! 이번에는 학생이 직접 문제를 만들어 봅니다.

• It is behind the Bank.

7. 게임 ⑥ 「Move the Furniture」 — 가구를 옮겨 보세요

가구 그림 카드를 준비합니다. 학생에게 다음과 같은 지시를 합니다.

• Put the chair on the right of the table.
• Put the lamp on the table.
• Put the bag under the table.

8. 게임 ⑦ 「Mom’s Map Challenge」

앞에서 읽었던 유학 간 아들의 방 이야기와 연결할 수도 있습니다. 아들이 엄마에게 자신의 방을 설명합니다.

• My bed is along the wall under the window.
• The wardrobe is on the right of the bed.
• The desk is by the window.

학생들은 글을 읽고 직접 방의 배치를 그립니다. 그 다음 서로의 그림을 비교합니다.

• “Did you put the desk by the window?”
• “Yes.”
• “Where is the wardrobe?”
• “It is on the right of the bed.”

이렇게 하면 읽기와 전치사 학습이 자연스럽게 그리기 → 말하기 → 확인하기로 확장됩니다.

9. 위치·공간을 나타내는 핵심 전치사 정리

① 안과 밖

전치사의미예문in~안에The books are in the cupboard.inside~안쪽에The cafe is inside the building.into~안으로He went into the room.outside~밖에The bus is outside the building.out of~밖으로She walked out of the room.

• in / inside는 위치를 나타내고,
• into / out of는 이동의 방향을 나타내는 경우가 많습니다.

② 위와 아래

전치사의미예문on~위에The book is on the table.above~보다 위에The shelf is above the desk.over~위에, ~을 가로질러The bridge is over the river.under~아래에The bag is under the bed.below~보다 아래에The picture is below the shelf.

③ 앞과 뒤

전치사의미예문in front of~앞에The car is in front of the house.behind~뒤에The cafe is behind the Bank.at the back of~뒤쪽에The kitchen is at the back of the room.

④ 옆과 가까운 위치

전치사의미예문next to~바로 옆에The chair is next to the sofa.beside~옆에The table is beside the bed.by~옆에, ~가까이에The desk is by the window.near~가까이에The school is near the station.

⑤ 사이와 주변

전치사의미예문between둘 사이에The Bank is between the Cafe and the Restaurant.among여러 대상 사이에The house is among the trees.around~주위에There are three chairs around the table.

• between = 보통 두 대상 사이
• among = 여러 대상 사이

라는 차이를 함께 익히면 좋습니다.

⑥ 맞은편과 반대편

표현의미예문opposite~맞은편에The supermarket is opposite the Bank.across from~건너편에The Cafe is across from the Restaurant.across the street from길 건너편에The supermarket is across the street from the 7-Eleven.

⑦ 왼쪽과 오른쪽

표현의미예문on the left of~의 왼쪽에The Cafe is on the left of the Bank.on the right of~의 오른쪽에The Wine Bar is on the right of the Restaurant.to the left of~의 왼쪽에The Bank is to the left of the Cafe.to the right of~의 오른쪽에The Office is to the right of the Restaurant.

⑧ 벽이나 선을 따라

전치사의미예문along~을 따라The sofa is along the wall.against~에 붙어, 기대어The wardrobe is against the wall. 옷장이 벽에 붙어 있습니다.

• 두 표현을 비교하면 더 쉽게 이해할 수 있습니다.
• -The sofa is along the wall.
• 소파가 벽을 따라 놓여 있습니다.
• -The wardrobe is against the wall.

⑨ 특정 장소와 지점

전치사 의미 예문 at~에, ~에서 Meet me at the Bank.in~안에, ~지역에 She lives in London.on~위에, ~에 위치한 The Cafe is on Main Street.

특히 at / in / on은 장소를 나타낼 때 문맥에 따라 의미가 달라질 수 있으므로 통째로 문장 속에서 익히는 것이 좋습니다.

10. 위치에서 길찾기로 확장하는 전치사

공간을 설명하다 보면 자연스럽게 이동과 방향을 나타내는 표현으로 확장됩니다. 표현의미예문 through~을 통과하여 Go through the door. into~안으로 Go into the building. out of~밖으로 Come out of the station .toward(s)~을 향하여 Walk towards the Bank. past~을 지나 Walk past the Cafe. along~을 따라 Walk along the street. across~을 가로질러 Walk across the street. around~주위를 돌아Walk around the building.

11. 전치사 게임의 핵심은 ‘번역’이 아닙니다

전치사 학습에서 가장 중요한 변화는 이것입니다. “under는 ~아래”라고 외우기에서 “소파와 창문의 위치 관계가 어떻게 되어 있지?”로 생각을 바꾸는 것입니다. 그리고 그 공간 관계를 영어로 표현합니다.

• The sofa is under the window.
• The wardrobe is next to the sofa.
• The desk is by the window.
• The supermarket is opposite the 7-Eleven.
• The Wine Bar is to the right of the Restaurant.

이렇게 되면 전치사는 더 이상 외워야 할 작은 문법 단위가 아니라 공간을 읽고 표현하는 언어가 됩니다.

12. 최종 미션 — 「Design Your Own Map」

마지막에는 학생이 직접 작은 방이나 동네 지도를 만들어 봅니다.

• Mission 1: 방 안에 가구 8개를 배치합니다.
• Mission 2: 각 가구의 위치를 전치사를 사용하여 설명합니다.
• Mission 3: 친구에게 지도를 보여 주지 않고 위치를 설명합니다.
• Mission 4: 친구는 설명만 듣고 지도를 그립니다.
• Mission 5: 두 지도를 비교합니다.

그리고 마지막으로 질문합니다.

• Did you get it right?
• Which preposition was the most useful?

이 마지막 활동까지 진행하면 학생들은 전치사를 보고 → 듣고 → 움직이고 → 말하고 → 쓰는 과정을 모두 경험하게 됩니다. 결국 전치사 학습의 목표는 전치사의 뜻을 많이 아는 것이 아니라, “어디에 있는지, 어디로 움직이는지, 무엇과 무엇의 관계인지 영어로 설명할 수 있는 것”​입니다.

공간을 읽을 수 있으면 전치사가 보이고, 전치사가 보이면 영어 문장이 훨씬 선명해집니다.

Start at the crossroads where it says “You are here,” facing the main junction. If you turn left, you will see the Bank building. The Cafe is located inside the building right behind the Bank.

If you proceed straight from the crossroads and turn left at the corner, you will find a 7-Eleven on your left side. A large Smith’s Supermarket is located directly across the street from the 7-Eleven.
